Homecoming is a treasured event in the Benson community. Yet, the majority of that community is unfamiliar with how it all comes together.
The event is mostly student run, with members of both the leadership class and the student body government pitching in to organize.
A member of Benson’s Leadership class, Andrea Caceres Cen, shares that, “Usually there’s the student body government, the president & vice president and it’s usually two people that already have experience when it comes to homecoming and pretty much the beginning is deciding well like always, what the theme is going to be.”
Cen also shared the brainstorming process of choosing the theme, explaining how they come together to discuss ideas and eventually have an anonymous vote. “We vote for the top three we want after seeing which ones come out on top.”
Cen stated that the fundraisers are typically managed by Torin King, the leadership teacher, and that the budget is overseen by Sheli Bryan, the bookkeeper. “We don’t go over a certain budget. I’m pretty sure so it’s either it can be the same budget, or it can be less depending on like the decorations people want to get.”
The leadership class began planning at the beginning of the school year, having it as one of their main objectives aside from Pep Assemblies. Many students spent hours after school setting up decorations and getting the space ready. Any student at Benson can share their ideas or ask questions about Leadership from Torin King, the group’s advisor.

Another Benson Student, Kya Anderson, shared her experience from attending this year’s event. “The DJ is really nice. And just the vibe is really good right now.” However, she also expressed a complaint, “I wish there was free snacks but I know some places can’t do that.”
Despite that, she agreed that it was, overall, enjoyable. “It’s a fun experience, good community and fun dance.”
