About

The Benson Orbit is the student-run newspaper of Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, Oregon. Produced by a staff of Benson students, the Orbit covers news, culture, sports, and opinions, with a mission to inform and celebrate Benson and its community. It serves as the modern successor to Tech Pep, carrying forward a legacy of student voice that began in 1920.
History
Journalism at Benson has its roots over a century ago. In the summer of 1920, a printing program was established at Benson and the first issue of Tech Pep released. Over the decades, Tech Pep covered championship wins, published fierce student opinions, and documented what it was like to be at Benson. They were an incredibly important part of Benson’s community. Unfortunately, in 2010, district budget cuts forced Tech Pep to end after a 90-year run.
For a decade and a half, Benson went without student journalism. In 2024, that started to change when a group of students, led by adviser Greg Huntington, formed The Benson Orbit as a club. By the next school year, the Orbit had become a full Journalism elective at Benson.
In March 2026, the Orbit published its first issue themed “Back From The Dead,” the first newspaper to circulate at Benson in 16 years.
