As a new school year starts, Benson’s radio station, KBPS, holds their elections. There are four leadership positions that Radio Seniors can run for: Chief of Staff, Chief of Music, Chief of Production, and Chief of Promotion. Jeff Martin, one of six Radio Seniors this year, ran and won the Chief of Promotion position. “I’ve run an Instagram before for another project,” Martin said, explaining why he thinks he is qualified for the role, “I was like, hey, that’s something I’ve gotten paid to do so I might as well do it for free, right?”
As Chief of Promotion, Martin’s main goal this year is to grow the Instagram following of KBPS to 1,000 so that KBPS can livestream its broadcast on Instagram. Currently the KBPS Instagram page, @1450kbps, has just shy of 500 followers. Martin said he plans to “take inspiration from other radio stations” as well as to do more of what has already been working for KBPS — promoting shows airing on KBPS, posting the results of sports games, and more.
Besides growing KBPS’s Instagram following, Martin says he wants “to get us to the point where […] people recognize our logo a little bit more.” Martin is also hoping to grow awareness around KBPS’s existence among the other PPS high schools. “We are the voice of an entire school district,” Martin said — KBPS serves the entire district — and Martin hopes that, by the end of his term as Chief of Promotion, more high schoolers will know that KBPS is here, not only to serve Benson, but to serve all PPS schools and students.
